LOS ANGELES - Jennifer Lopez said today that she will perform a musical tribute to the late queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla at the upcoming Billboard Latin Music Awards, set to air live on Telemundo on April 30.
Lopez is known for portraying Quintanilla in the biopic "Selena," which was released in 1997.
The tribute will also mark the late singer's 44th birthday. Selena was just 15 when she won female entertainer of the year at the Tejano Music Awards which helped her get a record contract, leading to a number of succesful albums. She later married her guitarist, Chris Perez.
In 1994, she earned a Grammy for best Mexican-American album for "Selena Live!" and appeared on the brink of mainstream stardom. A year later, the president of Selena's fan club shot her to death in a Texas motel room, just as her first English-language album was months from releasing. Her death at age 23 made international headlines.
The Billboard Latin Music Awards, will be hosted by actress and TV host Gaby Espino and Mexican singer Pedro Fernandez. The event will feature performances by Afrojack, Alejandro Sanz, Ana Gabriel, Carlos Santana, Carlos Vives, Daddy Yankee, Natalia Jimenez, J Balvin, Juanes, Julion Alvarez y Su Norteño Banda, Lucero, Roberto Carlos, Romeo Santos and Wisin.
