It's a No Go for 'Tron 3' As Disney Drops Plans for Sequel to Cult Favorite

May 29, 2015

LOS ANGELES - Disney has dropped plans to develop "Tron 3," the third installment of the cult favorite that was originally launched in 1982.

Variety reported today that the studio could not find a place on its jammed packed slate of films even as it looked into 2018 for possible release. The 2010 sequel “Tron: Legacy” earned the studio nearly $400 million in worldwide box office.

"Tron: Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski had been expected to direct the new film, with Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund starring. Plans had been moving forward with a slated budget of $170 million for the film set to be shot in Vancouver, Canada. But with a slate of films such as “Jungle Book,” another “Pirates of the Caribbean”  installment, “Alice in Wonderland, “Pete’s Dragon” and “Beauty and the Beast," among others, the studio found no room for the new film in the near future.

The original1982 film followed the life of a computer hacker who was thrown into a digital universe where he faced a life and death struggle in gladiator-style games.
