'DeGrassi' Moves to Netflix After Cancellation

LOS ANGELES - The teen-themed TV juggernaut "DeGrassi" is heading to Netflix after being abruptly canceled last week by MTV Canada. The show is carried by TeenNick in the U.S.

 

Netflix said in a statement, that the new series, “Degrassi: Next Class,” will continue the show’s stark approach to portraying the lives of high-schoolers. The current series focuses on a group of teenagers who must deal with such issues as racism, homophobia, violence, substance abuse, sexuality, body issues as well as the pressures of dating in the age of social-media. The series will continue to be produced by Epitome Pictures in Toronto.

 

The current show, “Degrassi: The Next Generation” will end after 14 seasons on TeenNick. It's series finale is scheduled to air this summer.

 

"DeGrassi" is part of the highly successful DeGrassi franchise made up of four different series airing . The franchis includes the series "The Kids of Degrassi Street," "Degrassi Junior High," "Degrassi High" and "Degrassi: The Next Generation."

 

The various versions of the series have aired on PBS, MTV, Nickelodeon and TeenNick since 1980. The current "DeGrassi" airs on TeenNick and is set to premiere its final season in July on MTV Canada.
