LOS ANGELES - Marvel's "Ant-Man" pushed past Adam Sandler comedy "Pixels" in a tight weekend box office race. The super-hero movie starring Paul Rudd, ended up on top with $24.91 million and passing the $100 million mark with a two-week total of $106.22 million, followed in second by Sony's "Pixels," which earned a disappointing $24.01 million.

Sony had expected a big weekend opening for Sandler's latest movie, but with negative reviews and little word-of-mouth support, "Pixels" did not come through for the studio. The film appears to have the odds stacked against it to earn the $88 million it cost to make.

Third place went to Universal's "Minions" which in its third week earned "$22.93 million for a total of $262.45 million since it opened.

Altogether, revenues from the weekend box office were down 3% compared with the same weekend a year ago, according to Market Watch.

The rest stacked up this way:

4. "Trainwreck" (Universal) $17.28 million for a two-week total of $$61.53 million

5. "Southpaw" (Weinstein) $16.70 million on its opening weekend

6. "Papertowns" (Fox) $12.65 million on its opening weekend

7. "Inside Out" (Disney) $7.41 million for a six-week total of $320.39 million

8. "Jurassic World" (Universal) $7.18 million for a seven-week total of $624.08 million

9. "Mr. Holmes" (Roadside Attractions) $2.87 million for a two-week total of $6.45 million

10. "Terminator: Genysis" (Paramount) $2.41 million for 4-week total of $85.68 million
