Universal On Track to Break $2 Billion in Domestic Box Office in Record Time

Universal's "Jurassic World" has helped the studio reach within striking distance of a new U.S. box office record (Universal Pictures Photo).

 

LOS ANGELES - Universal is set to break the domestic box office record of fastest time to reach $2 billion in domestic box office for one year when it may likely do so this weekend when "Straight Outta Compton" hits theaters.

 

The film is set to earn from $30 million to $40 million on its opening weekend.

 

The studio is set to break break Warner Bros.’ previous record of earning $2 billion by December 25, 2009. Universaly is also very likely to break the record for all-time domestic box office, which was set by Warner Bros. with $2.1 billion in 2009.


Universal's huge hit “Jurassic World” has been the year’s most biggest film, earning $637 million in domestic tickets while becoming the third highest-grossing film of all time. Universal's “Furious 7,” “Minions,” “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “Pitch Perfect 2” also have made the top 10 list of highest-grossing films of the year.

 

Universal had set a global box office record last week, when it became the first studio to earn $5.53 billion in one year.
