LOS ANGELES - "Under the Dome," CBS' TV adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name has been canceled after three uneven seasons. The series finale will air Sept. 10.

CBS said in a statement that the series would conclude with its Sept. 10 finale, which will close out the storyline about the unusual dome that has separated the occupants of a small Maine town from the rest of the world. "Under the Dome" premiered in 2013 to strong ratings thanks to a solid marketing push and the show's unusual storyline. Its 3.3 rating on its premiere among adults 18-49 and and 13.5 million viewers showed that big ratings during the summer were no pipedreams and could be powerful launch pad for  scripted dramas.

"Under the Dome" was partially funded by a deal with Amazon, which also airs the show.

The show's success proved a precursor for such CBS summer hits as "Extant," and "Zoo," both still airing on the network.

But so far this summer Under the Dome's ratings have dwindled to 1.8 rating among adults 18-49. But it still ranked as the No. 2 scripted series of the summer, with Fox's Wayward Pines ahead of it. "Under the Dome" is produced by Amblin Entertainment and CBS Television Studios.

The show stars Mike Vogel, Rachelle LeFevre, Alexander Koch, Colin Ford, McKenzie Lintz, Dean Norris, Eddie Cahill and Marg Helgenberger.
