Trailer for 'The Danish Girl' Shows Eddie Redmayne in Transgender Role

LOS ANGELES - Eddie Redmayne made a big splash in last year’s "The Theory of Everything," but in the new trailer for the upcoming "The Danish Girl," the actor appears like never before -- as a transgender woman.

The film tells the extraordinary love story inspired by artists Lili Elbe (Redmayne) and Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander), whose marriage and work are transformed through Lili's journey of self-discovery that ultimately leads to her becoming a transgender pioneer.

The movie shows a wife asking her husband to change into women's clothes so she can finish a painting after a model cancels. In that moment, one of the most unusual love stories of the twentieth century begins. But as their portraits become a sensation in 1920s Copenhagen, Gerda encouraged her husband to adopt this new female guise. What began as a harmless play led Einer to a landmark 1931 transgender operation that shocked the world and ultametely threatened their relationship.

The cast includes Amber Heard, Matthias Schoenaerts and Ben Whishaw. Tom Hooper directs the film from an adapted screenplay by Lucinda Coxon. Hooper also produces with Gail Mutrux ("Rain Man"), Anne Harrison ("Two Family House") and Working Title's co-chairs Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Linda Reisman serves as executive-producer with Senator Global Productions' Ulf Israel.

"The Danish Girl" hits theaters on November 27. The film is set to open in limited release against "Creed," "Victor Frankenstein," "The Good Dinosaur" and "The Night Before." The trailer is below.
