LOS ANGELES – It looks like some TV networks around the world will be going ape next season after IM Global and MarVista Entertainment announced today that they are teaming up to reimagine “King Kong Skull Island,” for television.

Based upon “Skull Island” from DeVito ArtWorks, as well as Merian C. Cooper’s “King Kong,” “King Kong Skull Island” will be the first live-action TV program featuring the iconic King Kong character. The proposed series aims to feature a female lead character along with a multicultural ensemble cast for an altogether contemporary take on the giant ape tale.

The series will be written and executive produced by Oscar nominees Jonathan Penner and Stacey Title (“The Bye Bye Man,” “Down on the Waterfront”). Dannie Festa (“Trolls”) of World Builder Entertainment will also produce.

Producers hope the new series will echo the success of “King Kong Skull Island” now playing in theaters. The film has grossed in excess of $552 million globally.
