Sacha Baron Cohen's 'Who Is America' Ends Season Without Airing Palin's Episode

August 27, 2018

LOS ANGELES – Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Who is America?” ended season 1 Sunday without airing its episode featuring Sarah Palin.

The Showtime show, now in its first season, featured Cohen playing characters who interviewed unwitting real people, including a number of political figures and getting them to say extremely silly things. The final episode of “Who Is America?” included segments with former Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank and O. J. Simpson, but the highly-anticipated segment shot featuring the former Alaska governor did not air.

The ex-governor and former running mate of the late John McCain complained in July that she had been duped by Baron Cohen, saying he had disguised himself as a disabled veteran in order to interview her.

In a Facebook post she wrote: “The disrespect of our US military and middle-class Americans via [Baron] Cohen’s foreign commentaries under the guise of interview questions was perverse.”

Cohen had interviewed several people as various characters, including Dr. Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr., a conservative pundit and Trump supporter who sat on a motorized scooter while interviewing guests.

In the Twitter account registered to the character Ruddick, Cohen defended the interview, saying: “I did NOT say I was a War Vet,” the Twitter posting read. “I was in the service — not military, but United Parcel, and I only fought for my country once — when I shot a Mexican who came onto my property.”
