'Cinderella' Tops Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES - Disney's "Cinderella" topped the weekend box office with a strong $70.1 million showing for the screen adaptation of the venerable fairy tale, first presented by the studio in cartoon form in 1950.

The current version of "Cinderella" bested Liam Neeson's action-adventure vehicle "Run All Night," from Warner Bros. which garnered a paltry $11 million, by comparison. "Run All Night" opened in 3,171 theaters while "Cinderella" opened in 3,875 theaters. "Kingsman: The Secret Service" was third in weekend box office with $6.2 million. The spy thriller from 20th Century Fox stars Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson.

"Focus," starring Will Smith as a suave con man, was tied for fourth with $5.8 million along with Hugh Jackman sci-fi flick "Chappie," which also rang up $5.8 million.

"Cinderella," which cost $95 million to make, stars Lily James in the title role, along with Cate Blanchett as the stepmother, Richard Madden as The Prince and Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother.
