'Furious 7' Tops Box Office with $147 Million!
LOS ANGELES - "Furious 7" blew the competition out of the water, topping the weekend box-office race with a record-shatteering $147.2 million for a total worldwide take of $392.3 million. The film reportedly opened to the widest release in Universal Pictures' history with 4,004 theaters domestically.
The movie broke a number of records, making it the biggest launch for any movie domestically since "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" in November 2013. It ranks behind "Harry Potter" which opened with $483.2 million, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, $394.4 million; and The Avengers, $392.5 million.
The film featured the late Paul Walker, which may have given many a good reason to see the movie and watch Walker one final time in his role of Brian O'Conner. The actor died in an auto accident in November 2013 when the film was being shot.
DreamWorks Animation's "Home" camen at No. 2 in its second week with $27.4 million for a domestic total of $95.6 million. Will Ferrell-Kevin Hart comedy "Get Hard" fell hard in its second week to $12.9 million for a total of $57 million. Disney's "Cinderella" fell to fourth place with $10.2 million with a $162.7 million total. It was followed by "Insurgent" with $10 million, for $103.3 million total; "It Follows," came in 6th with $2.4 million; "Woman in Gold," opening with $2 million in 7th place; "Kingsman: The Secret Service" in 8th with $1.7 million and $122.2 million; "Do You Believe," in 9th with $1.5 million for a $9.8 million; "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," in 10th place with $1 million for a total of $30 million.
