'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Tops Weekend Box Office with $77.2 Million
LOS ANGELES - Disney/Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" topped the weekend box office for the second straight week, with the second best second weekend totals ever with $77.2 million for a total of $312.85 million. It was only topped for best second weekend opening by its "Avengers" predecessor in 2012 which garnered $103.1 million in its second weekend.
The movie reached the $300 million mark in just 10 days, which is also in second for fastest movie to clear that milepost, with its predecessor "Avengers," ahead of it when it reached $300 in 9 days.
The Warner Bros./MGM/New Line buddy comedy release "Hot Pursuit" premiered in second place for the weekend with $13.3 million, which was just ahead of projected estimate of $12.5 million. The Reese Witherspoon/Sophia Vergara starrer's lackluster numbers was in keeping with negative reviews the film received going into the Mother's Day weekend release. The box office was expected to be off by 15 percent due to the holiday.
Lionsgate's "The Age of Adaline," starring Blake Lively and Harrison Ford was in third place with $5.6 million this weekend for a three-week total of $31.52 million
