'Pitch Perfect 2' Outpaces 'Mad Max' to Top the Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES - Universal's musical comedy "Pitch Perfect 2" topped the weekend box office, besting the "Mad Max" reboot "Mad Max: Fury Road" with $69.2 million on its opening weekend.
The Elizabeth Banks-directed sequel and her directorial debut, topped the $65 million earned by the original 2012 film. The film is the the third biggest opening for a female director, just behind Catherine Hardwick’s 2008 film, “Twilight” ($69.6 million) and Sam Taylor-Johnson’s “50 Shades of Grey” ($85.2 million). The film stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson.
“Mad Max: Fury Road” was in second place with $45.4 million just slightly better than the $44.4 million that Warner Bros. had originally predicted, Variety reported.
The Disney/Marvel "Avengers: Age of Ultron" continued strong with a third place weekend showing with $38.86 million for a three-week total of $373.03 million.
