'Jurassic Park' Breaks Weekend Box Office Record
LOS ANGELES - Universal's "Jurassic Park" as expected, blew the competition out of the water this weekend to set a new box office record for a new film opening with $208.80 million.
The film's total bested the previous record held by 2012's "The Avengers" which garnered $207.4 million. Overall, "Jurassic Park," earned $511.8 million worldwide, becoming the first film to gross more than $500 million in one weekend.
Last week's box office winner, the Fox comedy "Spy," slipped to second in its second week with $16 million with a 45 percent drop from the previous week. The Melissa McCarthy vehicle has earned $56.94 million so far. In third place was the Warner Bros. disaster film "San Andreas" with $11.01 million for a three-week total of $119.32 million. Focus Pictures' franchise sequel "Insidious: Chapter 3" continued to slide precipitously to fourth place with a 67 percent drop from last week with $7.30 million for a three-week total of $37.37 million.
