LOS ANGELES - Paramount's high flying "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" topped the weekend box office for the second straight week, earning $28.50 million for a two-week total of $107.76 million. Coming in second with a disappointing $25.68 million opening weekend was Fox's "Fantastic Four" reboot -- well below the estimated $40 million Fox had forecast.

The sixth edition of the Tom Cruise-led franchise has been wrecking the box office, both here and abroad with no apparent let up. The Marvel superhero epic however, could not overcome the bad reviews and negative word-of-mouth, making the newest version of the superhero franchise have an uphill climb to make up its $120 million-plus cost. International audiences, contributed only $34.1 million this weekend for the movie.

By comparison, the previous two "Fantastic Four" movies, which featured Jessica Alba, earned $56 million and $58 million respectively on their opening weekends.

Coming in third was Joel Edgerton’s thriller, "The Gift," which opened with $11.85 million thanks to critical praise. The movie tells the story of a young married couple whose lives are thrown into a harrowing tailspin when an acquaintance from the husband's past brings mysterious gifts and a horrifying secret to light after more than 20 years.

The rest stacked up this way:

4. "Vacation" (Warner Bros.) $8.95 million for a two-week total of $37.13 million

5. "Ant-Man" (Warner Bros.) $7.91 million for a four-week total of $147.52 million

6. "Minions" (Universal) $7.45 million for a four-week total of $302.80 million

7. "Ricki and the Flash" $6.61 million on its opening weekend

8. "Trainwreck" (Universal) $6.15 million for a four-week total of $90.95 million

9. "Pixels" (Sony) $5.43 million for a two-week total of $57.65 million

10. "Southpaw" (Weinstein) $4.70 million for a three-week total of $40.66 million
