'Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2' Tops of the Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES - Lionsgate's “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” was on top of the weekend box office with the finale of the science-fiction franchise, debuting to $102.66 million. The movie's take marks the year’s fifth biggest opening, but it wasn’t as big as the studio had expected.

Lionsgate had projected the movie's premiere would top $120 million in its opnning weekend. The opening also represents a low for the series, falling well below the serie's biggest opening of $158.1 million earned by 2013’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

Also opening was Sony's “The Night Before,” a raunchy comedy starring Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, came in fourth, earning $10.1 million from 2,960 theaters. The film's cost was $23 million. The other film opening was STX/IM Global’s remake of the Argentine thriller of the same name, "The Secret in their Eyes" struggled to earn $6.65 million.

Second place went to Sony's James Bond thriller "SPECTRE," which earned $15.04 million for a three-week total of $154.15 million. Fox's "The Peanuts Movie" was third with $13.20 for a three-week total of $99.35 million.

7. "The Martian" (Fox) $3.80 million for an eight-week total of $213.14 million

8. "Spotlight" (Open Road Films) $3.53 million for a three-week total of $5.80 million

9. "The 33" (Warner Bros.) $2.34 million for a two-week total of $10.0 million

10. "Bridge of Spies" (Buena Vista) $2.01 million for a six-week total of $65.24 million
