'Trainspotting 2' Lands at TriStar with Original Cast

LOS ANGELES - TriStar has closed a deal for a sequel to 1996's “Trainspotting” that will reportedly reunite Danny Boyle, the original film's director, with his original cast.

Ewan McGregor is set to return to star alongside Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner, and Robert Carlyle, while screenwriter John Hodge also is set to return for the yet-untitled sequel, which is based upon “Trainspotting,” author Irvine Welsh‘s follow-up novel called “Porno.” Sony boss Tom Rothman has reportedly been interested in a sequel to the film, having worked with Boyle at Fox Searchlight on “A Life Less Ordinary,” “28 Days Later,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “127 Hours.”

The new film will be produced by Boyle, Andrew Macdonald, Christian Colson and Bernie Bellew. Production will begin next spring in advance of a 2017 release that will denote the 21st anniversary of the original movie.

"Trainspotting" tells the story of Renton (Ewan McGregor), a young man who is deeply immersed in the Edinburgh's drug scene, who tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends.
