LOS ANGELES - Veteran horror film director/producer John Carpenter is set to executive produce the upcoming "Halloween" film from Miramax.

The legendary filmmaker and creator of the original “Halloween” films in the 1980s and 90s, will return to the franchise for the first time in years. Industry veteran Malek Akkad of Trancas International Films, will serve as producer while Jason Blum will produce for Blumhouse Productions.

Miramax and Trancas International Films made the announcement on Monday night. Miramax, which holds the worldwide distribution rights to “Halloween,” has yet to determine its theatrical distributor.

“Thirty-eight years after the original ‘Halloween’ I’m going to help to try to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all,” Carpenter said in a written statement.

The original 1978 film starred Nick Castle as mass murderer Michael Myers, while Jamie Lee Curtis made her film debut as Laurie Strode, the girl Myers stalks after escaping from a psychiatric hospital. The late Donald Pleasence portrayed Dr. Loomis, who sought to track down the unhinged Myers.
