Fox Is Bringing Back ‘The X-Files’ for a Second Season

LOS ANGELES – Fox is bringing back the newest edition of “The X-Files” for a second season After a long delay, a deal is finally in place to produce a second edition of Fox’s “The X-Files” revival. Returning are stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, and the show’s creator/executive producer Chris Carter.

Insiders at 20th Century Fox TV have said the studio had been seeking a deal for another season of the of “The X-Files,” but it was unclear whether the stars or Carter would be able to find time to return to the series. The show follows the cases of FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained incidents.

Fox TV Group chairman Gary Newman had said he didn’t expect to have the revival series ready by next season, given the complexity of all the principals’ schedules.

“Their lives don’t lend themselves easily to finding time to do this. Gillian lives in London, she has young children. Coming to Vancouver for three or four months is not easy for her, particularly when she has other work commitments,” Newman said in January. “David can be available, and then something big can come along for him. So it’s not easy to find time. We would love to do it again, and I believe there will be a time when it happens, but it does not feel imminent to me.”

The newest edition of “The X-Files” returned for a 10-episode season in January 2016, drawing an average of about 16 million viewers. Fox reported it was last season’s No. 2 broadcast drama. It originally premiered in September 1993 on Fox and aired for nine seasons. It earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award.
