LOS ANGELES — “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” made history again over the weekend as the eighth film to gross $2 billion at the global box office.
The distinction comes after it earned $360 million domestic and $927 million at its global launch at the end of July, as the film earned an outstanding reception from critics and audiences alike. With about $70 million on its third weekend domestically, the movie is well on its way to keep on rolling past recent megahits like “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Ne Zha 2” to become the third film to reach $2.5 billion before inflation adjustment, joining “Avatar” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
Domestically, the film is also looking to be the highest grossing release of all time by passing the current $936 million record set in 2016 by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” As it is “Brand New Day” is on track to reach that mark with $785 million after just three weekends, 5.6 percent ahead of the pace set by “Force Awakens,” though its mid-week gross numberrs have been lower compared to that film’s holiday run.
Currently, the film has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 85 percent with critics and 78 percent with audiences to go with a B on CinemaScore and 3.5/5 on PostTrak, scores consistent with last year’s “Jurassic World: Rebirth.”
