LOS ANGELES—"Superman,” one of the summer’s most anticipated movies, made its debut with $122 million domestically.
Released in 4,135 theaters, while raising $95 million from 79 overseas markets, the blockbuster release earned an estimated $217 million globally to top the competition in box office receipts.
The movie reboot gave DC Studios a needed boost after a slew of lackluster releases in recent years. James Gunn, who is the film’s writer-director and the co-head of the Warner Bros.-owned DC, had a lot riding on the new film which cost an estimated $225 million to produce ahead of marketing costs.
The film is just the third Hollywood-produced title of 2025 to debut at more than $100 million alongside another Warner Bros. release, “A Minecraft Movie,” which opened with $162.8 million, and Disney’s live-action debut of “Lilo & Stitch,” which earned an estimated $146 million when it made its debut.
Heading into the weekend, “Superman”’s opening had been the subject of much industry chatter as tracking services predicted its domestic debut at about $130 million or more, while the studio speculated the figure would likely be around $100 million or more due to the comic book fatigue facing the genre in recent years.
Many media industry watchers have speculated the film could face trouble since it was among the many male-oriented film releases this summer that include Universal’s Fourth of July blockbuster “Jurassic World Rebirth” and “F1: The Movie,” from Apple Original Films and Warner Bros.
