LOS ANGELES - Warner Bros.disaster film "San Andreas" not surprisingly topped the weekend box office with a strong $53.2 million, making it the biggest opening for Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson in a non "Fast and Furious" movie.
With not much competition next weekend, "San Andreas" is again poised to do strong numbers and top the box office for a second straight week. "Jurassic World" will likely take away much of its audience when it opens in two weeks, but for now, Warner Bros. can bask in the glory of being number 1. The Universal comedy "Pitch Perfect 2" was in second place after dropping by 55 percent from last week with $14.8 million for a three-week total of $147.52 million.
Disney's $190 million-budgeted "Tomorrowland" dropped from first to third with a weekend total of $14.30 million for a two-week total of $63.60 million. Bad reviews caught up to Bradley Cooper's starring vehicle "Aloha," with a paltry $9.67 million opening weekend as it reached sixth place.
The rest stacked up this way:
4. "Mad Max: Fury Road" (Warner Bros.) $14.18 million for a total of $116.47 million.
5. "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (Disney) $11.40 million, $427.55 million
6. "Aloha" (Sony) $9.67 million opening
7. "Poltergeist (2015)" $8.06 million, $38.52 million
8. "Far from the Madding Crowd" (Fox Searchlight) $1.46 million, $8.40 million
9. "Hot Pursuit" (Warner Bros.) $1.40 million, $32.38 million
10. "Home (2015)" (Fox) $1.25 million, $170.51
