LOS ANGELES - Universal's "Straight Outta Compton" stayed on top of the weekend box office for the second straight weekend with a $26.76 million take, well ahead of the weekend's new, the horror-themed "Sinister 2." and the spy entries "Hitman: Agent 47," and "American Ultra."
"Compton" has earned $111.48 million after two weeks. In second place, "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" earned 11.70 million for a four-week total of $157.76 million. In third was "Sinister 2," the sequel to the 2012 horror sleeper hit "Sinister," starring Ethan Hawke. "Sinister 2" earned back the $10 million it cost to make by raking in $10.63 million on its opening weekend.
With their negative reviews from critics, the $35 million "Hitman: Agent 47," and the $12 million "American Ultra." tanked at the box office. "Hitman: Agent 47," came in fourth place, earning $8.20 million while "American Ultra" followed in the sixth spot with $5.50 million. "American Ultra," starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, about a stoner who discovers that he’s really a sleeper CIA assassin, was not helped by Stewart's fans who failed to show up. "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." was sandwiched in between the two spy thrillers in fifth place with $7.42 million and $26.64 million over two weeks.
The rest stacked up this way:
7. "The Gift" (STX) $4.30 million for a three-week total of $31.05 million
8. "Ant-Man" (Warner Bros.) $4.09 million for a six-week total of $164.52 million
9. "Minions" (Universal) $3.71 million for a seven-week total of $319.96 million
10. "Fantastic Four" (Fox) $3.65 million for a three-week total of $49.62 million
